The player had been in there for several days indeed, it looks like this is run 24, with each time the player achieves the normal ending the simulation resetting, giving the player some rest time, and then moving on to the next run. If you look on the screen you can see what is presumably the island/dream simulation running. Specifically, I took this screenshot from the secret ending video that really points to that: I thought the secret ending was a "developer ending" at first too, but after hearing the audio logs in the cave and seeing the secret ending again, I feel that it's actually a "canon" ending that's much more an ending than the normal ending. If no one is there to witness that something happened, then it is almost as if nothing ever happened at all. Finally, at the end of the final cutscene, you end up where you started. Over time, people will forget who you are and the things you have done. When you complete the game (the normal ending), you are shown all of your progress unraveling at the end of the game. The statues represent people stuck in time, people who will not be able to perfectly transfer information to the next generation, distorting the accomplishments of the past.

Memories will be forgotten, information will be corrupted, physical artifacts will wither, etc. I believe the game is also trying to show how information will be lost over time. But when we witness what they are all doing, we see that they are all quite unique. It's easy to group people into one category. Also, the statues could represent the vast number of people and their complexity.

These quotes become useful to us because we go through the game and look for them we witness their existence. The audio logs are all quotes from famous people. A person's accomplishments are only meaningful if someone is there to witness them. My theory is that this game has to do with the accomplishments/history of humanity. And where does the Developer Ending come into all of this? Is that just someone waking up from their experience? What purpose do they serve? Especially since a lot of them seem worried or distressed - that isn't exactly relaxing or meditative. The only thing I can't explain are the statues everywhere.

Forcing someone into a static, controlled dream probably is a fragile situation that you can be broken out of easily. One of those logs talks about being in "very susceptible states", and that probably ties into all of this as well. I imagine they want to release this kind of thing publicly so anyone can take their own trip to the island. It also explains why there are couches and reclining chairs and stuff like that spread around the island, it's so you can chill out wherever you want. Large, overarching quotes spanning many religions and creeds. It seems like these people are trying to manipulate dreams in some way, or at least force people into a dream-like state for the purposes of relaxation or meditation, which also explains the quotes they bring out. They also talk about dreams, and a few times they mention "trips to the island". About 90% of this comes from the audio logs in the Underground area.Ī lot of those logs talk about an endeavor these people are undertaking, some sort of big project. So I've been trying to piece together some kind of main story of the game, and this is basically what I have so far. Seriously, dog, don't read this unless you've done a real big chunk of the game, there's spoilers in here.
